CLASS TITLE: Senior Manufacturing Engineer
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, develops and establishes lean manufacturing methods and processes as well as tooling requirements for new and existing products; and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Analyzes production processes to establish most efficient methods and sequence of operations for manufacturing. Reviews engineering designs to ensure manufacturability. Interacts with product development engineers to ensure that output meets design requirements. Develops, implements and validates new manufacturing procedures as needed. Responsible for seeing process through to completion. Defines equipment specifications to meet manufacturing goals. Designs tooling and fixtures to support manufacturing.
Identifies, develops, implements, and tracks continuous improvement / cost reduction programs. Trains employees in lean manufacturing systems and procedures. Participates in and facilitates the optimization of floor layout, material flow, and assembly processes. Actively participates, leads, and facilitates Kaizen events. Evaluates existing machinery and processes and recommends improvements that enhance both operator performance and ergonomics/safety of the overall operation.
Documents such processes and process improvements as: TAKT time, Inventory turns, Floor space utilization, Standard Work, Value Stream Maps, Set-up reductions (SMED), 5S, Preventative Maintenance and other documentation as required.
RELATED DUTIES: Develops and monitors operational metrics. Identifies opportunities for vendor improvements with regard to quality levels and Make vs. Buy opportunities. Writes reports and interacts with all levels of management. Prepares capital equipment requests, with cost justifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, supplemented by at least five years work experience utilizing lean manufacturing concepts. Demonstrated experience in implementing changes to manufacturing processes.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Thorough knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts as well as current GMP and ISO 13485 requirements.
Ability to lead others in cross-functional project teams. Ability to show documented results in achieving cost reductions. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to work well under pressure, to handle multiple projects, and to meet deadlines.
Good leadership, analytical and interpersonal skills. Excellent communication skills. Skill in accomplishing tasks within a team environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Working Conditions: Office and manufacturing plant environment with some variations in temperature, fumes, noise, dust and atmospheric conditions.
